ACGME-I-accredited residency programs in thoracic surgery prepare residents to provide operative, pre-operative, post-operative, and critical care for patients with acquired and congenital pathologic conditions within the chest. ACGME-I-accredited programs provide educational opportunities for residents to develop competence in surgical repair and management of congenital and acquired conditions of the heart, thoracic, and throacoabdominal aorta, lung, esophagus, chest wall, mediastinum, diaphragm, and pericardium.
